Background of the Study

Snake bites are a significant health concern in many parts of the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions like Nigeria (Ogunleye et al., 2023). Venomous snake bites can lead to life-threatening complications, including systemic envenomation, bleeding, renal failure, and respiratory distress (Ogunseitan & Olaniran, 2024). Early intervention and appropriate management of snake bite complications are critical in preventing morbidity and mortality. Nurses, who are often the first point of contact for patients presenting with snake bites, play an essential role in the immediate care of these patients, including administering first aid, monitoring vital signs, and facilitating the timely administration of antivenom and other medical treatments (Akinmoladun et al., 2024).

University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) is located in southeastern Nigeria, an area with a high prevalence of snake bites due to its rural and agricultural setting. The hospital sees a significant number of snake bite cases, particularly during the rainy season, when snakes are more active. However, the preparedness of nurses to manage the complications of snake bites at UUTH is unclear. This study aims to assess the knowledge and preparedness of nurses for handling snake bite complications, identifying gaps in their training and practices, and providing recommendations for improving snake bite management.

Statement of the Problem

Snake bite complications pose a serious health threat in Nigeria, but there is limited research on how well nurses are prepared to handle these complications. Nurses at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital may face challenges such as insufficient training, lack of antivenom availability, and delayed medical interventions. These factors can contribute to poor outcomes for patients with snake bites. This study seeks to investigate nurses' preparedness for handling snake bite complications and explore ways to enhance their ability to provide timely and effective care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of preparedness of nurses in managing complications from snake bites at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

  2. To identify factors that influence nurses' preparedness for handling snake bite complications at UUTH.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving nurses' preparedness for handling snake bite complications at UUTH.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of preparedness of nurses in handling complications from snake bites at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital?

  2. What factors influence nurses' preparedness for managing snake bite complications at UUTH?

  3. How can nurses' preparedness for managing snake bite complications be improved at UUTH?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses' knowledge of snake bite management is positively correlated with their preparedness to handle complications from snake bites.

  2. Nurses with more experience in emergency care are better prepared to handle snake bite complications than those with less experience.

  3. Inadequate training and resources significantly hinder nurses' preparedness to manage snake bite complications at UUTH.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in the emergency and critical care units at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. The study will assess their preparedness for handling snake bite complications and explore factors influencing their preparedness. Limitations include the potential for response bias and the lack of generalizability of the findings to other healthcare facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Snake Bite Complications: Health issues arising from venomous snake bites, including envenomation, bleeding, and organ dysfunction.

  • Preparedness: The ability of nurses to effectively respond to snake bite cases based on their knowledge, skills, and resources.

  • Nurses: Healthcare professionals responsible for providing immediate care to snake bite victims, including symptom management and facilitating appropriate treatments.
